Why an open patella, not a full sleeve

A closed sleeve presses fabric directly against the kneecap, and that pressure only builds as the knee bends. Cutting the fabric away and adding a stabilizing ring around the opening moves the load to the sides of the joint instead, where the four spring stays are built to carry it.
