A forward-tilted seat, a cushioned knee rest, and a fixed backrest sit on one height-adjustable frame. The seat carries less of your weight than it would in a standard chair, because the knee rest and backrest are built to take on the rest of it.

A different seat angle, not a softer chair.

A standard chair seats you at roughly 90 degrees between your thighs and your torso. Kneeling-chair designs pitch the seat forward instead, so the angle opens up rather than closing — the knee rest takes on the weight your thighs would otherwise carry, and the backrest is there for when you want to sit upright without any kneeling weight at all.

This isn't a new concept. The kneeling chair traces back to the "Balans" chairs designed in 1970s Norway, most associated with designer Peter Opsvik, which drew on physician A. C. Mandal's research into seated posture and hip angle. This chair follows that same basic geometry: a forward-tilted seat pan set at roughly 15°, paired with a knee rest and backrest on one adjustable frame.

Construction Details

Every part earns a place in the frame.
01
Forward-Tilted Seat Pan
Pitched forward at roughly 15°, rather than sitting flat like a standard chair seat.
02
Cushioned Knee Rest
Foam-and-linen pad that carries part of your weight instead of leaving all of it on the seat.
03
Fixed Backrest
A stationary panel for upright sitting with no kneeling weight involved.
04
Height-Adjustable Frame
Adjusts across 3–4 height settings spanning about 18–22 inches at the seat, to fit different users and desk heights.
05
Linen Seat and Knee Pad, Foam Fill
Both contact surfaces are upholstered the same way, since both carry real weight in this design.
06
Solid Wood Frame
Load-bearing joints are doweled and mortise-and-tenon, rather than welded like a metal frame.

How it works

Setup and Use

01
Set the surface Place the chair on a stable, level floor before adjusting anything.
02
Set the height Adjust the frame until the seat and knee rest line up with your body and your desk.
03
Sit and center Lower onto the seat with your knees resting on the pad, not the edge of it.
04
Lean when needed Use the backrest for upright sitting without any kneeling weight.
05
Shift and stand Change position through the day, and stand up during longer stretches of work.
TIP
The most common adjustment mistake is sitting down before setting the frame height. Level the seat and knee rest with your desk first — then sit.

Material Rationale

Why wood and linen, specifically

Solid wood was chosen over a welded metal-tube frame because the load path in a kneeling chair runs through the seat-to-frame joint at a forward angle, not straight down as it does in a standard four-leg chair. That joint is built with doweled and mortise-and-tenon joinery, made to hold under angled load rather than straight-down weight.

Linen with a foam fill was used at both the seat and the knee rest, rather than just the seat, because this design puts sustained pressure on the knees as well — leaving that pad thin or unpadded would just move the pressure point instead of removing it.
